Las autoridades de Estados Unidos repatriaron a México 111 aves en riesgo de extinción o protegidas que habían sido incautadas en la frontera común, informó hoy la Secretaría (Ministerio) de Medio Ambiente Mexicana en un comunicado.
El acto de entrega de los pájaros se realizó en la Aduana Americana de Otay Mesa, en la ciudad estadounidense de San Diego, limítrofe con la fronteriza de Tijuana, donde representantes de Fish & Wild Life entregaron los animales a miembros de la Procuraduría Federal de Protección de Medio Ambiente (Profepa) de México.
Las aves son nativas de los estados de Tamaulipas, en el noreste, Oaxaca, en el sur, y Nayarit y Sinaloa, en el occidente, y fueron requisadas por las autoridades de EU. en los últimos 18 meses.
Se trata de 11 pericos corona lila, 64 loros cabeza amarilla, 6 loros tamaulipecos, 20 pericos atoleros, 5 pericos cachete amarillo, 3 pericos verde mexicano y 2 pericos guayaberos.
Los ejemplares se encuentran en cuarentena en las instalaciones de la Profepa en Tijuana, "para constatar que no sean portadores de alguna enfermedad o condición que represente un factor de riesgo para otras aves con las que entrarán en contacto nuevamente", indica el comunicado.
Al concluir la cuarentena, los pájaros serán catalogados por especialistas que decidirán si son introducidos de nuevo en su hábitat natural o en centros especializados para ser incluidos en programas de repoblación de especies.
